Traditional theater arts have a long and deep-rooted history in the Ottoman Empire. Especially during the Ramadan months in traditional neighborhoods, the thematic arts become a part of the entertainment culture, and in this way, a performance culture, venues, stories and artists are developed. In the 19th century, with the predecessors of first the theater and then the cinematograph, the performing arts began to transform. Ortaoyunu and meddah mixed with theater and evolved into a new performance art called tuluat. With the advent of the cinematograph, the performing arts began to decline.
In the last period of the Ottoman Empire, therefore, political, economic and social changes were reflected in the entertainment culture. The most symbolic name of this culture is Karagöz. In the newspapers published at the time, people talk about the spread of the newly invented device by making Karagöz caricatures talk. Karagöz goes beyond a depiction and evolves into a means of expression of a changing culture. For this purpose, we wanted to use the established and symbolic value of Karagöz in our culture while explaining the journey of cinema in these lands. We wished to shed light on the journey of the culture formed by meddah, ortaoyunu and tuluat artists under the leadership of Karagöz, which evolved from cinematograph to digital.
